MATTRESS FIRM FLAGSHIP REDESIGN

Client
MATTRESS FIRM

Overview

While working with Barrows NA, the team led the redesign of a flagship Mattress Firm store at a moment when the brand was under pressure from emerging direct-to-consumer mattress startups. The brief was to signal that Mattress Firm could compete on clarity, design, and experience, not just price. The environment was transformed from a traditional product grid into a loft-like, highly shoppable space with clear zoning, intuitive sightlines, and a more residential, living-room tone. A simplified customer journey, supported by bold graphic storytelling and digital tools, helped demystify the mattress selection process and speak directly to younger shoppers who were skeptical of legacy retail.

How this project refined our practice

This project sharpened our approach to repositioning legacy retail brands through spatial design. It reinforced methods for using environment as a competitive tool, demonstrating that a considered customer journey, clear merchandising, and elevated material choices can shift brand perception and attract audiences who might otherwise dismiss traditional retail formats.
